Instructability providing employment opportunities for disabled people in gyms

Aspire (www.aspire.org.uk) has launched a series of employment opportunities for disabled people across the UK.

It all began nearly 5 years ago when Aspire created an accessible gym in Stanmore to support spinal injuries of people predominantly in wheelchairs.  As part of this, Aspire also provided a percentage of disabled staff.  This ranged from gym instructors to receptionists and managers.  Taking regular surveys of their customers, they soon realised that this had encouraged more disabled people than other surrounding gyms.

“In fact disabled people were choosing to travel to our gym rather than using their local gym” commented Hilary.

This demonstrated an inclusive workforce is more attractive for disabled people who are often more reluctant to access gyms.  As Aspire awe our 3 similar Jon application forms with the only figure in each case, including a wheelchair user.  The evidence showed clear discrimination towards employing a disabled person.  Like so many opportunities, it needed an awareness campaign for employers to understand the needs of disabled people.

To date, Instructability (add link to facebook page) has encouraged over 300 disabled people into various gyms and sports centres.  Supported by Sport England (www.sportengland.org), Aspire is looking to roll out more opportunities in 2017.
